When Creativity Calls (or not…)

I love when I feel creative—when I feel like I could write a book, engage an audience and *pretty much* conquer the world.

I’m feeling creative when I wake up mid-morning while the birds are chirping and the air is still crisp. Or at night, maybe 10:30 or 11 o’clock, when the rest of the house is asleep.

Creativity is what I feel when I hear a person’s life story for the first time. Or after reading an amazing book.

Creativity is invigorating, emotional, and inspiring, and it’s moments like those that give me the kind of creativity I long to “feel.”

When I’m feeling creative, it’s as though God has given me something to say or do—and everything inside of me yearns to see where He’ll take it from there.

I’d go so far as to say that I think the world is a better place because God has given us the ability to create. And I think God gave us creativity so we could leave the world a better place than we came in to it.

That said…

When creativity calls, we can’t ignore it—that much is for sure. I’m bringing this up because lately I’ve been lacking this feeling of creativity. I have no idea what to write about and quite frankly, no desire to sit down to do it.

But again, creativity is not always handed to us in a nicely wrapped box with a bow. And for those times when creativity is definitely not calling, we’ve got to strive for the vision or inspiration that we know God has placed inside of us.

In order for this to happen, we have to put ourselves in a place that will foster the growth of creativity.

For me, that means spending time outside. Listening to people’s life stories. Immersing myself in the Bible and other valuable books.

It’s when I do this that I intentionally give God the room to give me the words to say.

So ask yourself: How is God asking me to be creative and bring value to this world?

And what is one small thing I can do to foster the growth of creativity in my life?

Rather than living a stagnant life, let’s grow, create and bring value to this world we are living in. When hate or negativity seems to be the topic of every conversation, it is more important than ever that we do our part in spreading the opposite.

Striving for creativity—and using it as the vision or inspiration to make the world a better place—can be one decision we make to do exactly that.
